Nuclear energy has been identified as a priority in the Government of Canada's 2007 Science and Technology Strategy. Large scale nuclear power refurbishment projects and strong interest in building new power reactors demonstrates the Canada-wide importance of this technology. However, we need to consider the safety and security of used nuclear fuel over long time scales, how this spent fuel may eventually be used as a resource, and the role of governments and societies in the adoption of these technologies. The goal of the research is to establish a sustainable advanced nuclear fuel cycle and a safe geological disposal system for radioactive waste which addresses societal perceptions related to these technologies.
