Antennas are often the most critical part of a communication or radar system, in terms of both size and performance. The proposed program of the CRC tier 1 is in the area of Advanced Antenna Design. Market demands are driving the development of personal communication devices, such as smart phones and cell phones, to be smaller and lighter. At the same time there is a requirement for more antennas on the same device for multi-input multi- output (MIMO). Together this has led to an increasing need for high-performance, miniaturized antenna designs. The overall objective of the CRC program is to address the need for Research and Development in a Canadian context in Advanced Antenna Design and, in collaboration with the telecommunication industry, develop new and enhanced applications and devices. The main areas for applications are personal communication, wearable antennas, vehicular antennas, radar and MIMO radars, energy harvesting, as well as devices for phased arrays and smart antennas such as dielectric resonator (DR) antennas, and microwave DR.
