The smartphone is the fastest-growing consumer device in history and also one of the biggest threats to computer security today. The objective of this research proposal is to create new technologies that will create safe and secure smartphones for all users. Specifically, the goals are to a) safeguard user privacy, b) protect resources, c) increase resilience to theft or loss and d) defend against compromised smartphones. Current smartphone systems are based on desktop design philosophies and inherent many of the mistakes made with desktops. This research will take a novel look at securing smartphone software with information flow controls.
