Nature has designed cells as sensors to respond to a variety of external stimuli (e.g. heat, light or toxins). Our research program will develop a range of new organic sensors constructed from a family of stable free radicals containing the elements sulfur and nitrogen. The abrupt discontinuity in their magnetic response is unique in free radical chemistry and is sensitive to external stimuli such as heat, light, pressure and selected gases. We envisage (i) tailoring their properties at the molecular level in order to optimise their physical response and (ii) preparing prototype devices for the manufacture of high technology components for the electronics industries.
