The Arctic Ocean has been undergoing dramatic changes in recent decades. Accompanied with these changes is the release of legacy contaminants that were transported and stored in the Arctic in the past, and emerging contaminants that are associated with resource development and marine transportation. The CRC research program in Arctic Environment Chemistry will examine the critical role of a changing Arctic marine cryosphere in affecting the fate and effects of mercury, crude oil and other contaminants in the Arctic ecosystem. The results will directly inform and improve policies and practices related to Northern development and adaptation.
