This research program will make novel, high precision measurements of gases dissolved in the ocean to investigate ocean carbon dynamics. Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide and its effect on climate make understanding how carbon moves between different parts of the environment of utmost importance. We will make measurements that are unique in Canada, from common gases like oxygen and nitrogen to rare noble gases, in order to scrutinize the transport of carbon by both physical and biological mechanisms from the surface ocean, where it interacts with the atmosphere, to the deep sea, where it can be stored for hundreds of years.
