The ocean profoundly affects Earth¿s climate by storing carbon dioxide in its deep waters away from the atmosphere. Dr. Hamme¿s research seeks to quantify the processes that control this storage. Dr. Hamme will deploy novel robotic profiling floats in the North Pacific that measure oxygen, acidity, and nutrient levels throughout much of the ocean water column on several year missions. Using this data, her group will quantify the rate of marine biological productivity, especially the fraction that sinks into the deep ocean, and will explore the impact of unusual climatic events on ocean cycles.
