Ecological genomics of aquatic invasions

Freshwater ecosystems are experiencing an accelerated rate of species loss due to habitat destruction, over-exploitation and increased pollution. Using approaches that integrate evolutionary, ecological, toxicological, genomic perspectives and Daphnia as a model organism, the proposed research explores the extent to which populations evolve tolerance to multiple stressors. Long-term mutation-accumulation experiments under various mutagenic environments will be coupled with toxicity tests and population genetics studies on contaminated and uncontaminated habitats. This integrative approach will provide novel resources for the study of multiple stressors in freshwater ecosystems and a unique opportunity for multidisciplinary and collaborative research and training in aquatic ecosystem health.
