Population and ecosystem health are driven by the capacity of individuals to maximize their fitness under continuously changing environmental conditions. This research program examines how variation and plasticity in the way individuals physiologically manage environmental stressors drives adaptive investment strategies, success and survival in mothers and offspring. Research encompasses diverse, but centrally-coherent, projects including maternal stress as a translator of environmental quality for offspring, the role of stress physiology in mediating the effects of human-induced habitat alteration in species at risk, and whether plasticity in energetic physiology has the capacity to buffer individuals from climate change in sensitive Polar ecosystems.
