The recent development of molecular methods to study the biodiversity of microbes is revealing the incredible diversity of microbial communities and the importance of plant-microbe interactions for the fitness, distribution and function of plants. The objective of the CRC is to use global biodiversity surveys and experimental manipulations of forest plants and the microbes living on their leaves to understand the ecology and evolution of plant-microbe associations in forest ecosystems. The proposed research will greatly expand our understanding of the mechanisms of plant-microbe interactions and their importance for forest ecosystem function along broad spatial and environmental gradients.
