We address the cognitive bases of auditory communication: how people understand, remember, and produce auditory sequences such as sentences or melodies. We focus on memory and motor processes that underlie accurate, fast performance, and we track the cognitive and neural changes that occur as people acquire auditory-motor skills. The significance of this research for health sciences includes educational and clinical understanding of how novices and experts best learn new tasks. These findings benefit our comprehension of brain mechanisms that underlie the acquisition of sensorimotor skills, as well as disorders in memory and motor components of speech and music.
