Our capacity to adapt our behaviour to incoming sensory information is exceptional. Auditory-motor adaptation in particular is quick and effortless: musicians and speakers adapt their responses quickly to their partner's auditory signals. Yet individuals vary widely in their adaptation abilities. Why are some groups better able to coordinate their behaviour than others? The Chair has discovered temporal markers that generate predictions for why some groups coordinate better. Dr. Palmer develops mathematical models of temporal processes in music, speech, and tapping that govern group coordination. Successful coordination engages virtually all cognitive functions; the Chair's models offer significant social and health ramifications.
