Nava Cabinet Solutions is a provider of complete cabinetry solutions, including kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and hutches, to home builders and trade contractors. Operating a new facility, employing top-of-the-line machinery, and contending with rapidly growing volume due to product demand having increased three-fold, Nava is faced with various operational and customer satisfaction challenges related to quality, order fulfilment, supply chain, material handling, material waste management, and labour productivity. The primary objective of this research is thus to identify and implement lean best practices for planning and managing production and benchmarking health and safety baselines at the collaborating company's plant. This research will be carried out in two concurrent phases: (1) Detailed review of the current state of the collaborating company's operations/ processes, applications, infrastructure, and waste management/reduction practices, and (2) Identification and implementation of solutions based on lean innovation, ergonomics, and sustainability. In this phase, solutions aimed at reducing/eliminating wasteful processes, such as unnecessary transportation. As a result of this research, the industrialized construction domain in general is expected to benefit in the following ways: (i) productivity improvement through integration of state-of-the-art operations management and control planning tools; (ii) process waste elimination through the implementation of lean manufacturing principles; (iii) occupational safety improvement through the adoption of ergonomic solutions to reduce manual material handling risks and mitigate the productivity impact of the current manual operation; (iv) achievement of sustainability and recycling benefits, delivering environmental benefits and cost savings; and (v) HQP training, including exposure to industry operations. The research results will benefit Canada's economy and society by reducing the ecological footprint of construction through the reduction of process waste and material waste, will improve occupational safety, and will boost Canada's GDP and create jobs through improved construction manufacturing operations.
