The growing health and environmental concerns brought on by the use of petroleum based products in the**asphalt construction industry have necessitated the development of alternatives. Among these products are**Asphalt Release Agents (ARA), where diesel fuel has been used historically. ARAs prevent asphalt from adhering**to tools and equipment used in asphalt production, without producing overly negative side effects with regards to**the pavement. Since regulations have been implemented to restrict the use of harmful products like diesel fuel,**there have been a number of bio-soured alternative available in Ontario, including those from MultiSolv. However,**to develop better performing bio-sourced ARAs, their performance and safety (damage to the asphalt) need to be**evaluated, and research is lacking in this regard. Several quantitative and qualitative tests will be conducted to**test the performance and damage to asphalt of the ARAs. These will help evaluate and further develop a number**of different bio-sourced ARA formulations. This will further the understanding of these products in Ontario and**help develop superior performing products, encouraging the industry to use more bio-sourced ARAs.
