The minerals industry is a mainstay of Canada's economy with annual mineral production valued at $44 billion**in 2017 and $4B in capital investments for mineral processing, creating >634,000 jobs, $97 billion in exports,**hundreds of millions of dollars in R&D expenditures and a better standard of living for all Canadians.**Headquartered in Thunder Bay, ON, Nordmin Engineering Ltd. is a leading Canadian consulting engineering**firm in the resource and industrial sectors, supporting mining efforts worldwide. With a full range of services**from concepts to commissioning, from resource estimation to site closure, Nordmin recognizes the importance**of using cutting-edge technology to provide information and supportive solutions to solve complex problems.**Detailed work on the mineralogy and geochemistry of multiple ore types from varied mining operations will**better help understand the variation in grade and recovery of valuable minerals and metals in complex ores.**This knowledge is critical to allow Nordmin to identify innovative tools that they can use to increase their**success in upgrading mineral processing plants, and ultimately to improve recoveries for their clients. The**proposed research will use innovative synchrotron technology to provide insight into mineralogical and**geochemical variability in ores from different parts of a deposit, identify which minerals contain metals of**interest, determine mineralogical and trace element impurities that may adversely affect recovery and long-term**tailings management, and determine how the mineralogy and geochemistry of ore feed changes at different**stages of processing to improve recoveries. By utilizing the advanced scientific tools proposed in this research**partnership, we expect to help Nordmin deliver increased value by innovating the way ore materials, process**feed, process concentrates, and mining wastes are characterized, so they may ultimately improve the efficiency**and recoveries of important minerals and metals for their clients.
