Amnesia is a debilitating condition expected to afflict tens of millions of people in the coming decades. It is critical that the neuroscience and medical communities gain a deeper understanding of the nature of memory loss in amnesia and the mechanism through which it occurs. The proposed research will use neuroimaging and investigations in patients with memory disorders to examine this issue. By offering a new theoretical account of amnesia that emphasizes the important interrelationship between perception and memory, this research will reshape our understanding of higher-order cognition in general, and of memory disorders in particular.
