Cognitive Neuroscience of Aging

By 2031, the average life expectancy in Canada will reach 84. In order to promote good cognitive health and independence throughout those years, we critically require a better understanding of how the mind and brain change with age. The proposed research advances these goals by examining the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying age-related memory declines, and suggesting new methods for remediation. By showing that age differences in memory may be exaggerated by the artificial manner in which we test it, this work will not only challenge common conceptions of aging, but the way we study cognition in general.
