The objective of this study is to provide a measurement for optimizing the flocculation of oil sands tailings that will be used to improve water removal efficiency. The project will design and build an optical system with a data analysis system that will acquire and analyze images of the flocculation process to extract the information relating to the optimal flocculant dose. The system will be tested in experiments with different oil sands tailings and with different doses of polymeric flocculant to create a large database of images and flocculation conditions. The expected outcome is specifications for an on-line vision analysis system to be used by industry for optimization of the separation of tailings fines from water.
