The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Centre for Oil Sands Sustainability (COSS), established in 2010, collaborates with industry to validate and optimize innovative technologies with a potential to enhance the environmental and economic performance of Canada's oil sands. COSS, in collaboration with Air Liquide, will validate and assess an industrial waste water treatment unit, a novel technology in the area of oil sands processed water treatment (OSPW) for the Alberta market and beyond. Working closely with Air Liquide this novel product will undergo field-scale assessments in cooperation with industry end-users. The project is divided into three distinct phases; Phase 1 covers the modification, containerization and installation of **IMS-5000 unit at an industry end-user's site as per Canadian standards, Phase 2 will involve running a 21-day field pilot and collecting field data and samples for measuring key performance indicators (KPIs) against which the unit will be evaluated, and Phase 3 will be used to analyze collected samples, interpret collected field and laboratory data and quantify the key performance indicators critical to commercialize the unit amongst industry end-users. The broad impact of a cost effective and novel treatment technology capable of treating enhanced oil recovery (EOR) water in a wide variety of industries has a wide array of other target markets including: treatment of hydraulic fracturing water, agriculture and irrigation, domestic application, and poultry and meat production to name a few. This technology offers an innovative and sustainable solution to problems of water conservation and high cost of water treatment because of its combination of treatment power and mobility.? The pursuit of this initiative will represent a unique innovation originating in Alberta and Canada. This project builds a foundation for long-term collaboration with Air Liquide as they seek to position new technologies into the Canadian oil and gas marketplace.
