There is an evolving paradigm shift in the transportation industry toward more efficient, more reliable, safer, smarter, and**higher-performance vehicles that are more environmentally friendly. This paradigm shift is electrification and there is a**fierce global competition to develop lhe next generation of electrified vehicles. This project aims at helping Canada to**maintain and enhance its historical strengths and global competitiveness in the automotive industry with the emerging**market penetration of hybrid and electric vehicles.**Major technical challenges for the mass commercialization of electrified vehicles include significant difficulties in**developing powertrains and powertrain components that are low-cost, reliable, rugged, high-performance, efficient, and**scalable. In this project, the Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Hybrid Powertrain (the only CERC related to**the automotive industry) and McMaster University are joining forces with Chrysler--a major manufacturer of automobiles**in Canada--to develop the next generation of affordable electrified powertrains and powertrain components to overcome**these major challenges. In addition, this project leverages McMaster's unique strengths in automotive research,**significant government investments both at the Federal and Provincial levels in the globally-unique automotive research**infrastructure at McMaster, and the ongoing university partnership with Chrysler to provide much-needed critical mass**that will enable the realization of the next generation of electrified vehicles in Canada.**This unprecedented research and development program proposes a comprehensive plan for integrating the highestquality**research, education, and multi-disciplinary industry cooperation to significantly advance electrified powertrain**technologies and integrated solutions for vehicular applications. Furthermore, novel powertrain components and**subsystems including power electronic circuits, electric machines, motor controllers, energy storage management**systems, and embedded software will be developed to achieve superior energy efficiency and performance at a reduced**cost and increased reliability.
