Prototype seaweeds value-added products: demonstration of seaweeds transformation feasibility using seafood processing facilities at Premium Seafoods Limited (Cape Breton, NS)

The proposed project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of doing seaweeds transformation in a processing plant routinely used for lobster, redfish, shrimp, cod, snow crab and haddock. Therefore, facilities already present at Premium Seafoods Limited processing plant will be inventoried and assessed to identify seaweeds value-added products development possibilities. The proposed project will be conducted in three steps: 1- make an inventory of space and facilities available at Premium Seafoods Limited processing plant in Arichat ; 2- identify and validate the possibilities to develop prototypes of value-added products with the available equipment. The development of a prototype will be the first step to a final product, which means chopping, drying, blanching or freezing seaweeds to get a first stabilized product which could then be used to develop a final value-added one ; 3 - conducted trials to validate the feasibility of seaweeds prototypes development as well as the quality of the obtained prototypes.****
