Microbial keratitis is a form of eye infection that affects over 1 million people every year and can cause blindness when left untreated. The proposed program will develop novel pathogen sensing and therapeutic delivery technologies to tackle unique challenges in the detection and treatment of microbial keratitis. Dr. Gu's team will formulate mucoadhesive nanoparticles to deliver antimicrobial therapeutics directly to the infected tissues, and apply colorimetric gold nanoparticles for the rapid detection of pathogens in biofilms, a critical source of ocular infection. This research will lay the groundwork for new therapeutics and diagnostic tools for a range of eye diseases.
