With increased market pressures, environmental constraints and energy costs, Canadian companies are looking for new strategies to integrate decision-making processes to yield sustainable economic performance. Process operators and managers require new technologies to develop flexible strategies to respond to economic pressures while satisfying emission restrictions and reducing energy costs. The proposed research program develops innovative techniques to address time-sensitive decision-making approaches for the design of state-of-the-art management systems. **The research program proposes three specific techniques for the design and implementation of novel technologies for the integrated management and operation of large-scale processes. The first technology is a novel controller system design that automatically seeks operating conditions to optimize a measured performance metric. The method requires no precise mathematical descriptions of the process. The proposed techniques alleviate important limitations of existing approaches and yield a robust and reliable framework for real-time decision-making strategies. **The second technology provides a framework for the design of large-scale systems that require the simultaneous orchestration of many operating decisions. With the help of recent advances in distributed optimization and emerging technologies in control engineering, the research proposed develops a systematic framework for the design of complex decision-making communication protocols and control algorithms.**The last aspect of the research program proposes a new theoretical foundation of the design of algorithms for large-scale dynamical systems operating over communication networks. With the growing need to automate and optimized large-scale dynamical systems over mobile networks and the internet, new techniques are required to handle the complexity of the information flow over complex architectures. The proposed technology will improve competitiveness of Canadian companies by helping manufacturers to address decision-making processes in complex communication architectures.**The results of this research program will yield commercially viable products and methods to assist control engineers and practitioners in the design of process management systems that guarantee quantifiable benefits. The results of this research will provide key technologies for the analysis and the design of complex control systems, providing a considerable advantage in maintaining economic viability and sustainability of large-scale systems. The proposed technologies will enable manufactures to handle large-scale systems. Consequently, they will gain the necessary flexibility to develop new commercial approaches that provide optimal performance with respect to measurable process outcomes such as economic performance, production rates, environmental constraints, energy costs and green-house gas emissions.
