The problem of energy consumption and management in commercial, industrial and institutional buildings has been the subject of extensive research and development in many aspects of engineering. Johnson Controls is a recognized world leader in the area of building systems control and optimization that has successfully provided innovative and advanced control, monitoring and optimization solutions to building owners and operators. In this project, we develop a new control technology that can be used in a generic fashion to minimize energy consumption in building systems operating over sensor networks. This technology enables the real-time computation of control policies that can achieve building wide optimization objectives. The approach proposed is based on recent developments in the area of extremum-seeking control and network-based control. Working closely with the experts at Johnson Controls, the project will be aimed at the development of a proof of concept for the proposed technology and its implementation in an operating building systems control framework.
