英文摘要
As the global human population continues to rise, the demand for agriculture to supply high quality food, fibre**and energy increases. At the same time, consumer pressure is mounting to reduce the environmental footprint**of agricultural production and move toward more sustainable and environmentally friendly production methods**to meet the increase in demand. Plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) can contribute to achieving these**goals. Previous research for KGS Group identified two proprietary strains of Pseudomonas spp. KGS Group**is a consulting engineering firm that provides a wide range of services including water resource management.**The two bacterial strains were initially isolated to assist with phosphorous solubilisation and plant uptake to**minimize movement of this essential plant nutrient from manure into water resources. Subsequent**experimentation indicated that these strains may also cause plant growth promoting effects other than improved**phosphorous nutrition on some plants. The purpose of the current Engage proposal is to quantify and better**understand these additional plant growth promoting effects, focussing on seedling vigour, seed yield and seed**quality, under field conditions with and without phosphorous fertilization in wheat and canola, two of the most**important crops to western Canadian agriculture. This research will provide vital new information on the**behaviour of these PGPBs in important crop species under field conditions and assist KGS Group in defining**the applicability and potential market for these PGPB strains.
