Smart materials that can reversibly change their properties in response to changes in their environment (e.g. temperature, pH, chemical concentrations, magnetic fields, or light) offer significant potential in biomedical applications, with particular promise in enabling the development of drug delivery vehicles with improved targeted and/or time-dependent drug dosing and tissue engineering scaffolds with well-controlled cell-scaffold interactions.*Research in the Hoare lab is focused on coupling engineering approaches (including high-throughput screening and statistical analysis) with advanced physical characterization of smart materials to identify optimized smart material chemistries and structures with customized and/or novel properties for targeted applications.
