The proposed research project is an initiative between the Canadian company TETechS Inc. and researchers at the University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus. TETechS is a pioneer in the emerging market of terahertz spectroscopy, and the company has had particular success in using terahertz spectroscopy to probe the (chemical) composition and (physical) form of plastic products. Terahertz spectroscopy is ideally suited to this application because the terahertz radiation that it applies can effectively penetrate and identify the polymers that are present in such products.****TETechS has been successful in commercializing terahertz spectroscopy to the needs of plastic manufacturers, but through such work they have identified a critical challenge. The challenge arises in characterizations of plastic products having multiple layers of polymers. These multilayered polymers make it difficult to extract each polymer's individual composition and form. The proposed research project targets this challenge.****The proposed research project will have the researchers at the University of British Columbia develop an analytical solver that can process the measured terahertz spectra and extract the detailed composition and form of multilayered polymers that are present. The UBC researchers are uniquely qualified for this work. The team has extensive experience in terahertz spectroscopy and its use on polymers, and they are eager to tackle the challenge faced by TETechS Inc.****
