Have you ever started to reach for a tasty snack, only to stop a second later, struggling to resist temptation? Despite decades of research, we don't fully understand why decisions sometimes feel like an extended battle, or why people make choices they later regret. The proposed research program will use innovative combinations of computational modeling, brain imaging, and continuous behaviour tracking to reveal the dynamics of decision making and self-control. This groundbreaking research will yield novel insights into why people fail to achieve their goals, and allow us to develop new technologies and strategies to help them succeed.
