Canada has the world's second largest land territory in the world and is well positioned for large-scale microalga farming for production of biofuels and value-added products. However, lack of efficient farming systems have been a major bottleneck for commercial microalgal biofuel production worldwide. This study proposes to develop a novel photobioreactor that localize gas exchange and promises low energy intensity and high productivity, which is to be coupled with a novel strategy for controlling contamination to enable safe cultivation of microalgae, freshwater or marine, with unsterile media and unsterile aeration to further reduce farming costs. Building on these technology breakthroughs, this reach will target two low-handing fruits, food-grade oil/polyunsaturated fatty acids production and biopolymer production from dairy waste liquid, whey, for production of biofuels and value-added products.
