Sterilizers for research in biotechnology

The grant is for purchase of a bench scale and a large scale sterilizer that are essential facilities for studies in Biological and Environmental Engineering, where sterilization of media, agents, biological wastes and cultivation vessels at small or large scale, respectively, are required. Currently, six research groups in two departments in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Ottawa have been relying on two outdated units that were purchased 25 years ago for sterilization operations. These two old units, however, have shown clear signs of aging and deterioration, causing significant safety concerns and frequent interruptions in research. The sterilizers to be purchased using the RTI grant will allow us to renew this essential research capacity.
