Cells in the body are exposed to complex combinations of mechanical, chemical, and adhesive signals that play a pivotal role in regulating cell function. However, the vast majority of biological experiments are conducted on static, hard, flat, dishes. The proposed Canada Research Chair in Advanced Cellular Microenvironments aims to bridge the gap between the well-controlled, yet unrealistic Petri dish, and the chaotic, but physiological animal and human models. Through integrated microscale engineering, optical microscopy and tissue engineering approaches, this research program will develop the critical systems necessary to improve translation of discoveries from the bench towards clinical applications.
