AP Dynamics Inc. provides high-value engineering services and analysis in the fields of torsional vibrations,**piping stress, pulsation and erosion mitigation, and mechanical design. One of the current challenges is the**erosion in Once Through Heat Recovery Steam Generators (OTSGs) piping due to water droplets existing in**the flow of steam. To investigate the erosion rate caused by the steam jet within the pipes, AP Dynamics and**the University of Calgary have formed a collaborative relationship to design, manufacture, optimize, and test a**setup to mimic the steam jet system with integrated sensors. This project is the extension of previously held**NSERC DG and Campus Alberta Small Business Engagement Program to further investigate the erosion rates**in the steam pipes using various test coupons and different quality of steam and contaminants. We will**investigate the parameters influencing the erosion rate of the internal surface of the pipes at different steam jet**velocites, attack angles, and amounts of wet steam. We will also predict the erosion rate based on the**experimental results. The prediction of erosion rate is critical for OTSGs to prevent catastrophic failures and**optimize the Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) processes for extraction of heavy hydrocarbons. The**outcomes of the research will enable training of HQP and provide a competitive edge for AP Dynamics for**evaluating erosion-corrosion failures of steam boilers.
