Remote communities in Canada rely heavily on diesel as their primary energy resource. Owing to the growth in fuel prices, the adverse effects of fuel transportation and storage, and increased carbon footprint, energy policies have started to take a more environmentally healthy approach. In this context, Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems (HRES) which incorporate locally available renewable energy sources and energy storage systems have emerged as a viable solution. The optimum design and power management of HRES must be thoroughly analysed before actual deployment; especially when integrating large shares of renewable energy into smaller off-grid power systems. ****Solar Solutions Canada Inc. is a specialized entity in the field of renewable energy that wants to investigate the feasibility of integrating HRES in the off-grid power systems in Northern Canada. Solar Solutions Inc. has experience in practical implementation of many renewable energy projects, but they are short of resources and time to research methodologies for optimization of isolated grids and energy management systems. ****This project aims to fulfill this immediate need and to initiate collaborative research between Solar Solutions Canada Inc. and University of Manitoba with the aim of yielding high prospects on a path towards cleaner, safer and quality energy resources. This project will also contribute to train two graduate students.******
