Synchrophasor-based wide area monitoring and control is an important tool that can help minimizing large scale blackouts. Many utilities are currently implementing wide area monitoring, protection and control (WAMPaC) systems based on synchrophasor measurements. These systems, especially the protection and control systems which have system wide impact, must be thoroughly tested before actual deployment. Closed loop testing using real-time digital 7simulation is the most reliable and cost effective means of testing such systems. RTDS Technologies Inc. (RTDS), as the world leading manufacturer of real-time power system simulators, wants to develop and demonstrate the capability of testing synchrophasor applications using real-time simulations. This project aims to fulfill this immediate need, and establish a foundation for further collaborative research between the RTDS and University of Manitoba in this growing field of research. The project will also contribute to train two Ph.D. students and one M.Sc. student.
