The current telecommunication infrastructure is designed for human activities and human applications such as voice calls, video streaming and web browsing. With the introduction of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the deployment of smart-cities, a large number of machines will be in charge of a number of applications that will enhance and automate functions for smooth city operation. The telecommunication traffic that results from such a deployment is quite different from traditional human traffic and could, eventually, hinder the operation of current wireless networks. This project deals with the characterization of machine traffic as well as the experience of applications that relate on that traffic in the context of smart-cities. We want to study the interaction among smart-cities applications, including mobility applications, study their impact on current and forthcoming telecommunication infrastructure and propose methods to predict performance degradation.
