We are witnessing radical changes in telecommunication networks that are driven by the increasing popularity of Internet wireless applications, the dawn of the Internet of things and the need to manage large amounts of data. Alongside these developments, there has been an increasing awareness on the eco-energy impact of Internet and Communications Technology (ICT) and many hardware, algorithmic and software proposals have been studied. In this project we deal with the planning, performance and robustness aspects of those networks, further exploring a key idea: communication networks that are planned integrating beforehand green energy and energy-efficient options in the modeling end up being much more energy and performance efficient than those on which green options are implemented after being planned with traditional methods. We will start by investigating planning issues of current wireless networks if they were operating with green sources. Next, we explore the impact of different architectural, virtualization and cloud proposals under a network planning, performance and reliability perspective. In particular, we propose to study the feasibility of Wireless powered communications at the network level, through detailed planning models and get in-depth into the trade-offs of energy-costs, network performance and network robustness of the evolving C-RAN proposals.
The long-term vision of the project is being able to design forthcoming networks to operate with a large amount of green energy, increasingly reducing the dependence on traditional forms of energy, while guaranteeing the end-to-end network performance required by the new types of applications. In the shorter and medium term, we want to investigate different planning and operating trade-offs concerning energy, virtualization, performance and reliability in forthcoming wireless networks.
