This study seeks to address a problem of interest for the Composites VCI Inc., specialized in the structural adhesive bonding of aluminum sandwich panels. They are currently using anodization of aluminum to ensure good adhesive bonding between aluminum pieces. While anodization provides good adhesive strength, this treatment is very expensive and the duration of the stability of this treatment is very short as it's hygroscopic. Therefore, the objectives of this project is to (i) chemically etch aluminum surface with mild alkaline solutions, (ii) modify them with self-assembled monolayers (SAM) of innovative organic molecules blend and (iii) study their durability against water absorption from environment. Furthermore, carryout the adhesive bonding between etched, and SAM-modified aluminum surfaces for testing.
