Vesalius Cardiovascular is a medical device company. The company is designing and developing a surgical**implant able to repair mitral regurgitation, without operation.**The gold standard treatment is currently open-heart surgery. Due to risks associated with the surgery, a large**number of patients cannot undergo an operation and subsequently cannot be treated. Vesalius Cardiovascular**goal is to replace the open-heart surgery with a procedure, i.e. an implant delivered through the vein and**deployed to the left side of the heart. The patient will not require open-heart surgery anymore.**Vesalius Cardiovascular is at the engineering phase, requiring heavy mechanical design and engineering to**build the implant and apply physics law to a clinical environment.**The company requires extensive mechanical engineering R&D to define the characteristics of the net, a major**component of the implant. This NSERC project concerns the net. The research project will cover designing and**testing the net and will include material studies, data and dimensions, interaction with moving leaflets,**interaction with blood flow and integration with other materials.
