Normal wear, design flaws, and external influences and disturbances, such as overload, cause gradual deterioration in many systems, which can lead to inferior performance and/or catastrophic failure. Satisfactory control and monitoring of a system requires accurate information about both the system and its individual components, and operational characteristics. Comprehensive information is often not readily available, particularly when the system is in operation has been altered. In addition, since equipment/machinery manufacturers do not generally foresee a need to determine and supply such information, they do not provide a built-in means to extract such data in the future. Over the past years the applicant has continued research in online system/parameter identification, fault detection, isolation and recovery. The result of such work helps maintain equipment and systems in safe and economical operational mode. Many successful strategies have in fact been developed by many researchers for detecting and diagnosing faults and failures in variety of industrial settings. However, the "true" source of the fault is often not distinguished. It is indeed a highly possible scenario for a fault in a system to decommission an associated sensor. Each fault or failure scenario requires a distinct remedy, and if the source of the fault is indistinguishable it can lead to an inappropriate yet "supposedly corrective" action being taken. With a sensor failure it may not be necessary to ground the system, whereas a failure in the system may call for an urgent action. The proposed research is intended to develop means of correctly locating the source of the fault.
