The research to be undertaken during this Chair will develop and apply laser measurement techniques to unravel the dynamics of turbulent reacting flows, such as those found in aerospace propulsion and large-scale power generation engines. The aim is to explain, predict, and prevent a variety of non-stationary phenomena that arise as combustors are pushed against current performance limits, novel configurations are explored, or unconventional fuels are used. Such events can render a system inoperable or cause (potentially catastrophic) damage. Hence, this research will enable sustainable air travel and power generation that has improved performance and reduced environmental impact.
