Stash Energy is currently working on an energy storage technology in collaboration with several utilities**including Hydro Ottawa, Maritime Electric, Saint John Energy. They have also received investment from**Summerside Electric, a power utility in Prince Edward Island with the highest level of integration of wind**energy in North America. They have already shown evidence of scalability and commercial viability of this**technology. This energy storage system uses phase-change materials (PCM) that pose many challenges, which**restrict its use. Therefore, further research is required to improve the technology.**It is proposed to explore alternative methods of energy storage in Dr. F. Handan Tezel's Energy-SMART lab in**the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at University of Ottawa, in Stash's energy storage**system. After the successful completion of the NSERC Engage project, Dr. Tezel wants to continue her**collaboration with Stash Energy through this proposed NSERC Engage Plus proposal for the optimum design**of the proposed heat pump combined with adsorption thermal energy storage capability. They are applying for**more funds to build a prototype and commercialize this technology, according to the design that will be**finalized during this Engage Plus project. This research will assist Stash Energy in developing their next line**of products. In turn, Stash Energy will be better positioned to have a significant impact and to expand their**market share in Canada and internationally, which will also generate jobs for scientists, engineers, and**technicians in Canada. The development of this technology has a potential to replace existing technology; and**thereby reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that are currently emitted by the industry in Canada and if**implemented internationally, all over the world.
