Fluid movement and surface properties have considerable influence on human health, the environment and technological applications such as remediation of underground water. This research program aims at controlling flows in nano-and-micro channels, in mesoscale droplets, and in large-scale porous media. Research results will be applicable in membrane technology for clear water, in processes for recovering more underground oil, and in generating sustainable energy using salty water. In the long term, the unique and new knowledge of controlling flows at different scales by leveraging interface properties with experiments will benefit a broad spectrum of sectors in our society.
