The proposed collaborative research and development project between the University of Waterloo, ArcelorMittal Dofasco, a producer of automotive steel products, and Zelixir Inc., an organization dedicated to the interest of zinc and its users, aims to investigate the effects of Zn and Al-Si coatings on the weldability of advanced high strength steel (AHSS). The coatings behavior and its effects on weld microstructure during resistance spot welding (RSW) and laser welding will be correlated with the mechanical performance of the joints under static and dynamic loading conditions. The focus will be towards liquid metal embrittlement (LME) due to Zn coating and fusion zone softening due to Al-Si coating during welding of AHSS. The investigation will provide a guideline for mitigation and remediation of LME cracks in Zn coated and fusion zone softening in Al-Si coated AHSS during welding. Moreover, the project will increase knowledge of coating and substrate reaction during welding. The results of the study will be beneficial to the Canadian manufacturing sectors in general, and will specifically contribute significantly to the steel and automotive industries. Training of highly qualified personnel (HQP) will assist in fostering talent in the manufacturing industry and simultaneously strengthen the reputation of the University Waterloo as a world-renown research institution.**
