Over the last decades, the systems required by enterprises to stay competitive have shown themselves to be increasingly more difficult to engineer as the need to account for their integration into a wider context (an encompassing system) has created the demand for system of systems engineering. As such, the engineering of systems of systems has shown the limits of traditional systems engineering technologies, particularly when such systems are enterprise systems. **The proposed research program is specialized in the area of system of systems engineering. Its main objectives are to advance current knowledge (i.e. new theories and models) with regards to system of systems engineering, particularly enterprise systems engineering (ESE), as well as the design of new technologies for practicing effectively and efficiently the latter.* *Presently, the community is faced with four fundamental challenges:* Confusion because of competing definitions with regards to the meaning of ESE.* Scarcity of effective and tested engineering technologies for conducting ESE.* Integration of engineering process across multiple system levels - from ESE to software engineering.* Comprehensive and proper application of advances in systems thinking to ESE.**The short-term objectives of this research program will focus on clarifying the meaning of ESE as well as develop novel technologies for the latter by transferring current knowledge from the field of systems thinking.**The mid-terms objectives of this research program will focus on integrating (in theory and in practice) the lifecycle management processes of software engineering, systems engineering and ESE in order to establish a map of important touch-points and problem areas.**The long-terms objectives of this research program will focus on the engineer of support tools for the conduct of ESE as well as for integrating engineering processes across software engineering, systems engineering and enterprise systems engineering**This research program will provide new engineering technologies to Canadian organizations to help them remain competitive. In addition, many organizations are in search of highly qualified people in the field of ESE: financial and investment companies, governmental agencies, manufacturing and retail companies, and others. However, very few organizations have access to such specialized expertise and they struggle to staff their continuous development of ESE initiative, because of the lack of such training programs in Canada.**At the international level, a number of recognized institutions have established ESE research and training programs. This research program will contribute to fostering a Canadian presence in the field of ESE, a field in which, to this day, Canada is practically absent.
