Canadian-based Redlen Technologies is a leading manufacturer of high-resolution Cadmium Zinc Telluride(CZT) semiconductor radiation detectors. Redlen has developed a CZT-based photon-counting detector modulefor x-ray computed tomography. This detector module enables estimating the shape of x-ray spectra - afunctionality that is fundamentally not possible with existing clinical CT systems. There are two challengeswith Redlen's novel detector modules: charge sharing and pulse pile-up - both lead to a reduction in x-rayimage quality. Dr. Tanguay is an Early-Career Researcher who has developed advanced models that enableunderstanding the imaging performance of x-ray imaging detectors. This Engage project will leverage Redlen'sstate-of-the art technology and Dr. Tanguay's unique expertise to solve Redlen's unique R&D problem, and indoing so will (1) develop new tools for modelling energy-resolving x-ray imaging detectors, (2) create newknowledge on the fundamentals of image formation in x-ray CT and (3) develop advanced algorithms forcorrection of charge sharing in energy-resolved x-ray CT. This research project will advance Canadiancompanies' knowledge of x-ray image science, thus increasing business opportunities and internationalcompetitiveness of the Canadian manufacturing sector, will produce highly qualified personnel with the skillsrequired to meet future industrial needs in the field of radiation detectors for medical imaging and industrialapplications, and will contribute to Canada's position as a technology leader.
