英文摘要
Humulus is a small genus of flowering plants native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Hops are the female flowers (seed cones, strobiles) of the species Humulus lupulus that are used as flavouring agents in beer production. There are many hop varieties grown in North America. Each different hop variety contributes unique flavour and aroma profiles in beer, and have different advantages and disadvantages in local growing environments. As such, there is significant need for the development of new local hops varieties with desirable flavour and aroma profiles. The Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) Bio-Innovation lab will use its expertise to provide genetic and metabolomic support to Green Flora Greenhouses Ltd. for the development of new British Columbia (BC) derived hops cultivars. The KPU Genomics Lab will use genetic tools to guide breeding and farming practices, and use chromatography to quantify molecules important for taste and aroma in each of Green Flora's new cultivars. Students will benefit from the opportunity to participate in applied research and contribute to the development of new hop cultivars ideal for BC production and distribution. The products from this work will be used by Green Flora Greenhouses and their clients throughout BC and across Canada to improve hop production and provide more varietal options for brewers.
