The Davis lab is renowned in the area of cavity optomechanics, which uses optical cavities to measure mechanical deformation. This technique can be harnessed for a wide variety of fundamental science and real-world applications, such as the oil fouling sensor of this proposal. In a previous NSERC Engage grant, the Davis lab worked with Phase Sensors to develop a proof-of-concept optomechanical oil fouling sensor. This was wildly successful and led to a provisional patent, and a large contract between Phase Sensors and an international oil company. This CRD project will build upon this success and allow the Davis lab to refine the optomechanical oil sensor detection and control system, as well as making it more robust for in-the-field prototype demonstration and testing. This is expected to increase the sales and marketshare of this Canadian SME, while also improving greenhouse gas emissions as these sensors are used to optimize oil-refinery processes.
