In this proposal we aim to demonstrate that marine waste water treatments can be designed based on photocatalytic nanoparticles, i.e doped titanium dioxide. In particular the doping is used to absorb visible light, while not diminishing the activity and at the same time circumventing the fact that only 5% of the sun light reaching the surface of the earth is UV light. Because waste water has many organic compounds to decompose to harmless water and carbon dioxide, the photocatalyst has to be non-selective. In a previous PhD, we showed that nitrogen doped titanium dioxide nanoparticles are capable of completely decomposing phenol, para-chlorophenol, and even penta-chlorophenol. The latter is one of the most persistent organic pollutants.
