Virtual reality (VR) film is becoming a popular application of this emerging technology. A major problem in VR film design is that of viewpoint control; unlike traditional film where the shots presented to the viewer are ultimately chosen by the director, VR introduces the possibility that users may interactively control their viewpoint (both in terms of position as well as rotation). Consequently, viewers of VR content may look away from scenes intended by the film creators. This imposes barriers in storytelling in this new medium. A potential solution is to disable viewpoint control, at the possible loss of immersion. This project investigates two interrelated problems in VR film viewpoint control. We first propose to evaluate the merit - in terms of impact on user experience and immersion - of interactive vs. non-interactive viewpoint control. Second, we will empirically compare mechanisms to control the view direction, giving VR film makers tools to help them better understand and employ interactivity in their films.
