Internet of Things (IoT) enables devices such as wireless sensors and actuators to be connected and to communicate with each other, with little or no human intervention. According to conservative estimates, the tally of these connected devices will reach the staggering number of 20 billion in 2020. Potential applications and services are numerous. However provisioning these applications and services is quite challenging. Sound and innovative architectures are required. The challenges include cost efficiency, Quality of Experience (QoE), and agility. Emerging technologies such as cloud computing, fog computing, network function virtualization (NFV), and Software Defined Network (SDN) can help in tackling them. This proposed research is a continuation of the work I have done the last 6 years with my discovery grant which was complemented by two CISCO collaborative research initiatives grants I was awarded the last 2 years. It aims at cost efficient and agile applications and services provisioning architectures which deliver high Quality of Experience (QoE) to end-users. We aim at full-fledged and fully integrated solutions to applications and services provisioning in IoT. These solutions will integrate cloud architectures for cost efficiency, fog architectures for QoE and NFV/SDN architectures for agility. For each one of the architectures we will research components, interfaces and accompanying algorithms. We will propose architectures which focus on sensing and architectures which focus on actuation, then use them as the pillars of the full-fledged IoT solutions. According to IDC forecasts, the Canadian Internet of Things (IoT) market will be worth more than $6.5 billion by 2018 and will continue growing at a vigorous pace the following years. This proposed research will contribute to the growth. *****
